  • Get good travel insurance. Medical facilities are basic and full medical insurance including cover for evacuation has proven necessary. Bring adequate supplies of any necessary medication.

  • Check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice.

  • Bring enough money. Travellers cheques in US$ and £sterling are widely accepted. Major hotels/restaurants accept credit cards.

  • There are stiff penalties for changing foreign currency except with officially authorised dealers (eg the banks). Beware of the temptations of an increasingly open parallel market.

  • Keep belongings in a safe place, preferably in the hotel safe.

  • Take your passport with you to cash travellers' cheques and for proof of ID when making bookings for trips to outer islands.

  • Leave a copy of your passport details and local address and telephone number at home with relatives.

  • Enter next of kin details into the back of your passport.

  • Beware of leaving belongings unattended on isolated beaches, and walking on beaches, or off the main street, late at night.

  • Bring suntan lotion and insect repellents as both are difficult to obtain locally. Be prepared for humidity.

  • Don’t carry drugs. Sellers are active on the main beaches. Prison sentences and heavy fines are usual for those found in possession.
