    • Check Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice before travelling.

    • Be aware that if you or your parents are of Pakistani origin you may also be a Pakistani citizen, even if you have never held a Pakistani passport before. This means that under certain circumstances the British Government can be prevented from assisting you.

    • Keep your passport safe, as the black market in forged passports is large in Pakistan. If travelling by public transport don’t leave our passport in your bag – keep it about your person at all times, preferably in a money belt or inside pocket.

    • Leave a copy of your passport, tickets and planned itinerary with friends/relatives, particularly if you are trekking or climbing in the mountainous regions of Northern Pakistan – should a rescue be needed, a clue as to where you should be may be a life saver.

    • Enter next of kin details into the back of your passport.

    • Remember that Pakistan is a strict Muslim state and pork products and alcohol products should not be brought into the country. Dress modestly – whilst less of a problem in cosmopolitan cities such as Karachi and Islamabad men should not wear shorts, and women should ensure their shoulders and legs are covered when out in public. Women should cover their heads when entering mosques or other holy places.

    • Expect to be stared at – this is not considered rude in Pakistan, and is purely because you are new and different.

    • Make sure you have sufficient funds to cover the expenses for your stay in Pakistan. Bank transfers can take a few days, and it is inadvisable to use credit cards in Pakistan – several cases have been reported of the number being ‘cloned’ and used to make large purchases overseas.

    • Don’t travel to Pakistan without travel insurance to cover everything from medical treatment/evacuation to the loss of passports and belongings.

    • Don’t get involved with drugs – the penalties for attempting to carry drugs out of Pakistan include the death sentence. Bear in mind that if arrested, it can take many months for your case to be heard.

    • Don’t photograph sensitive military establishments – this can include such innocent seeming constructions as bridges and dams. If in doubt, don’t take the picture.

    • Don’t take photographs at airports or from aircraft.
