    • Travel Advice. Check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice.

    • Insurance. Make sure you are fully covered for medical treatment. There is no reciprocal National Health Service agreement and as in many countries, costs for medical treatment or hospital care must be met by the traveller. Private healthcare in Malaysia is expensive.

    • Passports and Visas. British passport holders coming to Malaysia as tourists can stay up to two months without a visa, but your passport must be valid for six months longer than your stay in Malaysia. A passport is necessary for travel between the Peninsula and East Malaysia. Don't remain in Malaysia beyond the limit stamped in your passport. Overstayers can face arrest, fines and even imprisonment.

    • Personal Security. Beware of bag snatchers - there have been many reports of bags being snatched by motorcyclists. Do report any loss immediately to the tourist police. Beware of con men - tourists are sometimes drawn into gambling games and as a result lose large sums of money. Do not get isolated in remote areas, especially after dark.

    • Credit cards. Use your credit card sparingly - credit card fraud is rife in Malaysia.

    • Local customs. Respect local laws and customs - Malaysia is a predominately Muslim country. You should dress modestly. Topless or nude bathing is both illegal and unacceptable. Drunkenness can lead to arrest.

    • Drugs. Don't get involved in any way with drugs. Penalties are very severe. Drug offences in Malaysia carry heavy fines and sometimes the death penalty. Don't carry anything through customs for someone else unless you know exactly what it contains.
