- Holiday insurance. Do make sure you are fully covered not only for
medical treatment, local hospitalisation and medical evacuation but also
for any unexpected expenses (eg missing charter flight, losing your
passport).
- Do check Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice before
travelling.
- Do bring enough funds with you for your stay and return. Bank
transfers from the UK to Jamaica take several days. The British High
Commission cannot advance money.
- Travelling independently, and intending to stay in a hotel/guesthouse
outside the normal tourist areas? Do check the hotel’s credentials with
the Jamaican Tourist Board.
- Do keep your passport, money and valuables in a safe place.
- Do enter next of kin details into the back of your passport.
- Do beware of pickpockets and bag snatchers. Don’t carry too much money
and avoid wearing conspicuous jewellery, as you would in any tourist
resort.
- As in most tourist areas you should not wander about on your own after
dark if you are not familiar with the locality.
- Do report robberies to the police, especially if you lose your
passport or a large sum of money. A police report is required to obtain a
new passport. It is advisable to keep a copy of the detail page of your
passport, and copies of any other important documents.
- Too much sun – especially if mixed with alcohol – can result in
dehydration, and lead to serious health problems. Do take care.
- Don’t get involved with drugs. The penalties are mandatory prison
sentences, served in Jamaica, and fines. Fines are high. Don’t carry
anything through customs for someone else.
- Don’t – hail taxis at the roadside. Do ask your hotel to order one on
your behalf.
