    • Ensure that you take out full medical and travel insurance.

    • Check the FCO Travel Advice before booking your ticket and just before you go.

    • Bring enough funds in case of emergency.

    • Keep belongings in a safe place out of public view.

    • Respect local laws. Canadian beer is typically stronger than in the UK – do not drink and drive.

    • Obey speed limits. Take extra care when driving in winter and at dusk and dawn when deer and moose are most often encountered.

    • Heed local weather warnings - winter in Canada can be dangerous if you are not adequately protected.

    • Leave a photocopy of passport, airline tickets and itinerary with friends or relatives in the UK.

    • Enter next of kin details into the back of your passport.

    • Don’t carry drugs (including Qhat, which is legal in the UK but not in Canada).

    • Don’t overstay your visa or non-refundable airline ticket.

    • Don’t pick up hitchhikers or strangers when driving – especially in remote areas.
