- Check Foreign Office country advice before travelling.
- Local Customs: Respect local laws and customs. Brunei is a Muslim
country. You should dress modestly. Topless or nude bathing is both
illegal and unacceptable. Drunkenness can lead to arrest.
- Alcohol: Alcohol cannot be legally bought or sold in Brunei. Any
non-Muslim traveller from abroad can bring up to 12 cans of beer and two
bottles of wine/spirits, but these should be for personal use and must be
declared to the customs Officers.
- Drugs: Do not get involved in any way with drugs. Penalties are very
severe. Drug offences in Brunei carry heavy fines and sometimes the death
penalty. Don’t carry anything through customs for someone else unless you
know exactly what it contains.
- Passports and visas: British passport holders coming to Brunei as
tourists can stay up to one month without a visa, but your passport must
be valid for six months longer than your stay in Brunei.
- Insurance: Get adequate travel insurance, including medical cover.
There is some free state medical service, but if you are hurt in an
accident or fall seriously ill you may need private care, or perhaps
evacuation to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Make sure you are fully covered
for private medical treatment and possible emergency medical evacuation.
