    • Holiday Insurance: make sure you are fully covered for medical treatment, local hospitalisation and medical evacuation. Get insurance that also covers unexpected losses or expenses (e.g. lost luggage, stolen cash and credit cards or cancelled/missed flights).

    • Drugs: never get involved with drugs. The penalties are fines and/or mandatory prison sentences for even small quantities of ‘soft’ drugs. Do not carry anything through Customs for anyone else.

    • Travel Advice: check Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice before travelling.

    • Money: bring enough money for your stay. Dollar traveller’s cheques and credit cards are more easily replaced than cash if stolen. Bank transfers from the UK to Barbados can take several days.

    • Valuables: keep your passport, money and personal belongings in a secure place, preferably a safety deposit box or hotel safe. Always lock hotel/apartment rooms, including balcony doors. Keep a written record of your bank card numbers and a photocopy of your passport’s details page. Enter next of kin details into the back of your passport. Never leave valuables on the beach.

    • Personal Safety: use common sense and be vigilant. Crime exists and has recently increased. As in most tourist areas avoid unlit areas, including beaches after dark.

    • Local laws: it is an offence for anyone, including children, to dress in camouflage clothing. Keep enough money back to pay local departure tax (currently Barbados $25 per person aged 12 or over).

    • Dengue Fever: the dengue fever mosquito is found throughout Barbados. Take normal precautions against bites and use repellent during daylight hours.

    • Sun: take care and use high factor sun-block. Too much sun, especially if mixed with alcohol, can result in dehydration and serious health problems.

    • Returning home: visitors on package holidays must travel on the specified return date. Failure to do so will incur replacement ticket and accommodation costs.
